25 Years of Service to the Community |
The year was 1983:
- Sally K. Ride becomes the first female American astronaut and is a mission specialist
on a Space Shuttle flight.
- The Compact Disk (CD) is introduced for recorded music.
- The final episode of M*A*S*H* airs, a record 125 million watch and advertising cost more than advertising for the Super Bowl.
- Terms of Endearment wins the Oscar for Best Picture.
- Radio Shack announces the Tandy Model 2000 computer with the “new” 80186 (33MHz) chip.
- President Reagan calls the U.S.S.R. an “Evil Empire”.
- And the Board of Directors of Phoenix Place (an adult mental health center) and Children’s Orthogenic Center (a children’s mental health center) decide to form Development Centers, Inc.
- When Development Centers was incorporated on January 3, 1983, we had a staff of 24 who,
through 4 programs, provided services to 357 consumers. The full year budget was $750,000.
Much has changed since that time:
- The Space Shuttle program is about to be mothballed.
- CDs are slowly being replaced by BlueRay DVDs.
- You still might be able to catch an episode or two of M*A*S*H* or the movie Terms of Endearment
on late night TV.
- Our cell phones today have more computing power than the Model 2000 computer.
- The “evil” U.S.S.R. fell like the Berlin wall.
- And today we have a staff of 126, serve over 4,100 consumers through 21 programs and have an annual budget of almost $11 million dollars.
